Now Voskopoje is simply a small village. Albania is one of the poorest European countries, suffering from almost 50 years of international isolation due to a totalitarian regime under the communist dictator Enver Hoxha, who died in 1985, and a series of political decisions that led to Albania's economic breakdown in 1997.
